CITATIONS

The Best UK Citation Sites for Local SEO

Not all directories are worth your time. These are the UK citation sources that matter most – and how to list your business so they actually help.

What Makes a Good Citation Site?

  • It is a real, maintained site that people and search engines use.
  • Its business pages are indexed by Google.
  • It is relevant – UK-focused, or specific to your industry or town.
  • It lets you control your details (so you can keep them accurate).

Trade and Review Platforms

For trades: Checkatrade, TrustATrader, Rated People, MyBuilder and Which? Trusted Traders. These double as review sources and lead platforms – pick the ones your customers use.

For hospitality and leisure: Tripadvisor, OpenTable and similar. For general reviews: Trustpilot.

Professional and Industry Registers

If you belong to a regulated or accredited profession, your entry on the official register is a powerful citation: the Law Society’s Find a Solicitor, the General Dental Council register, NICEIC or NAPIT for electricians, the Gas Safe Register, the NFRC for roofers, ICAEW or ACCA for accountants, Propertymark for estate agents, and so on.

Local Sources

Your local chamber of commerce, business improvement district, council business directory, local newspaper business guide and community sites. These are some of the most relevant citations you can get – and competitors from other towns cannot copy them.

How to List Correctly

  1. Write down your exact NAP format once and copy it everywhere.
  2. Use your real trading name – the same as on Google.
  3. Use the same main phone number everywhere (avoid tracking numbers as the main number).
  4. Link to the same website URL (with or without www – be consistent).
  5. Use the same categories and a similar description.
  6. Keep a spreadsheet with every URL and login.

Do Not Forget Clean-Up

Old listings with a previous address or phone number can hurt more than missing listings help. Search for your business name, old phone numbers and old addresses to find them. Our local citation building service includes this clean-up.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How many citations should a UK business have?

Quality beats quantity. 30–60 accurate listings on relevant, trusted sites is plenty for most small businesses.

Are paid directory listings worth it?

Usually the free listing is enough for SEO. Pay only if the directory itself sends you real customers.

Should I use a citation service?

It saves time, especially for clean-up of old listings. Avoid services that promise hundreds of submissions.
