Why Local Keyword Research Is Different
National keyword research chases big search volumes. Local keyword research is about intent and geography. “Boiler repair Sheffield” may only be searched a few hundred times a month, but almost every one of those searches is a potential job worth hundreds of pounds.
Local searches also come in patterns: service + town (“roofer Bristol”), service + near me, service + area (“dentist Clifton”), problem searches (“boiler losing pressure”) and comparison searches (“best accountant in Reading”). Each pattern needs a different kind of page – and the Map Pack often shows for some and not others.
What You Get
Buyer-intent keyword list
Service, town, area and “near me” variations grouped by intent – ready to buy, comparing, or researching.
Town and area modifiers
Which towns, suburbs, boroughs and postcodes people actually search with, and which are worth a dedicated page.
Difficulty & opportunity
We look at who ranks now: if the top results are national directories with weak pages, that is a quick win for a local business.
Keyword-to-page map
Every keyword assigned to one page, so pages do not compete with each other (keyword cannibalisation).
Competitor gaps
Searches your competitors rank for and you do not – often the fastest new enquiries.
Questions customers ask
Real questions from Google’s “People also ask”, reviews and forums, to turn into FAQs and blog posts.
Example: Local Keyword Map for a Plumber in Leeds
| Keyword pattern | Example | Intent | Best page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Service + town | plumber Leeds | High – ready to hire | Homepage or main service page |
| Urgent service | emergency plumber Leeds | Very high | Dedicated emergency service page |
| Service + area | plumber Headingley | High | Location page (only if you truly serve it) |
| Specific job | boiler installation Leeds | High | Service page |
| Problem search | why is my boiler losing pressure | Research | Blog post / guide |
| Cost search | boiler installation cost UK | Comparing | Pricing guide |
This map then drives everything else: your on-page SEO, new location pages and local content.
Tools and Data
We combine data from Google Search Console (if you have it), Google Keyword Planner, professional SEO tools with UK databases, Google autocomplete and “People also ask”, plus the language your customers use in reviews. Search volumes for small towns are often shown as zero in tools even when real people search – so we also look at what Google shows in the results before deciding a keyword is worthless.
Keyword research is included in every monthly plan, or available as a one-off project if you want a plan for your own team or web designer. Ask us for a one-off quote.
Mistakes We See in DIY Local Keyword Research
- Targeting the city name only, when customers search by area or suburb.
- Chasing keywords with high national volume but no local buying intent.
- Building several pages for the same keyword, so they compete with each other.
- Ignoring the Map Pack – some searches are won on Google Maps, not with a web page.
- Trusting “0 searches” in tools for small towns without checking the actual results.
Good keyword research is the cheapest part of local SEO and saves the most money later, because every page, post and link then points at searches that bring customers. It also tells you which searches are not worth chasing – often just as valuable.
