How to Get More Google Reviews (the Right Way)

Reviews help you rank and help customers choose you. Here is a simple, rule-friendly system any UK business can use to get more of them – every week.

Why Google Reviews Matter

Reviews affect local rankings (as part of prominence) and conversion: people compare star ratings, the number of reviews and how recent they are before they call. Reviews that mention the service and area also add relevance.

In your Google Business Profile, choose “Ask for reviews” to copy a short link. Save it somewhere easy – your phone, your invoicing tool, your email signature.

Step 2: Ask Every Customer

The biggest reason businesses have few reviews is that they do not ask. Make it part of finishing every job. Asking all customers (not just ones you expect to be happy) is also what Google’s policies require.

Step 3: Time It Right

Ask when the customer is happiest: just after the job is finished, the problem is solved or the product is delivered. Within 24 hours is ideal.

Step 4: Use a Simple, Personal Message

Hi Sarah, thanks again for choosing us for your new boiler in Roundhay. If you have a minute, a quick Google review would really help our small business: [link]. Thank you! – Dave

Using the customer’s name, the job and the area makes it personal – and customers often mention those details in their review.

Step 5: Make It Easy in Person

A QR code on a card, invoice, counter or van lets people leave a review on the spot. For clinics and shops, a small sign at reception works well.

Step 6: Send One Reminder

If they have not left a review after a few days, one polite reminder is fine. More than that becomes annoying.

Step 7: Reply to Every Review

Thank positive reviewers personally and mention the service. For negative reviews, stay calm, acknowledge the issue, explain what you have done and offer to continue the conversation privately. Future customers read your replies.

What You Must Not Do

PracticeWhy to avoid it
Buying reviewsBreaks Google’s policies; fake reviews are banned under UK consumer law (Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024)
Offering discounts or prizes for reviewsIncentivised reviews are against Google’s policies
Only asking happy customers (review gating)Not allowed by Google
Staff or family reviewsConflict of interest – can be removed and may trigger filters
Review swaps with other businessesTreated as fake engagement

Why Reviews Sometimes Disappear

Google’s filters remove reviews that look suspicious – for example, many reviews from the same location (your office Wi-Fi), sudden bursts, or reviews with links. A steady, natural flow avoids most of these problems.

Turn It Into a System

  • Add the review link to your job-completion text or email template.
  • Give each team member a target of asking every customer.
  • Track new reviews monthly against your top competitors.
  • Share great reviews with the team – it keeps everyone asking.

Need help setting this up? Our review management service builds the system and handles replies. Reviews are just one part of ranking in the Map Pack.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I ask customers for Google reviews?

Yes. Google encourages businesses to ask customers for reviews – just ask everyone and do not offer incentives.

Why are my Google reviews not showing?

Google may have filtered them as suspicious, for example if they came from the same Wi-Fi, arrived in a sudden burst or contained links. A steady natural flow helps.

How many Google reviews do I need?

Enough to compare well with the businesses in your Map Pack – and, just as important, a steady flow of new ones.
