Service Area Businesses on Google: The Set-Up Guide

If you travel to your customers – trades, cleaners, mobile services – Google treats you as a service area business. Set it up wrongly and you risk suspension; set it up well and you rank.

Are You a Service Area Business?

Business typeSet-up
Customers visit you (shop, clinic, office)Show your address – storefront business
You visit customers only (roofer, cleaner, mobile mechanic)Hide your address – service area business
Both (a showroom plus home visits)Show your address and add service areas – hybrid

How to Set Up a Service Area Business Correctly

  1. Verify with your real address. Google still needs it for verification, even though it will not be shown.
  2. Remove the address from public view. In your profile’s location settings, clear the business address so it is not displayed.
  3. Add service areas. Add the towns, cities or regions you genuinely cover – up to 20. Google recommends staying within about two hours’ drive of your base.
  4. Keep your name clean. No towns or keywords added to the business name.
  5. Match your website. List the areas you serve on your website and create genuine pages for your most important towns.

Do Service Areas Help You Rank in Those Towns?

Not much. Service areas tell customers where you work, but Map Pack rankings are still based on your verified location. That is why service area businesses usually rank best near their base and need location pages to win organic searches in other towns.

Common Mistakes

  • Showing a home address publicly – a policy breach and a privacy risk.
  • Using a virtual office or PO box to appear in a bigger town.
  • Adding service areas hundreds of miles away.
  • Creating several profiles for different towns without real staffed premises.
  • Copying the same location page for 50 towns.

Can You Have More Than One Profile?

Only if you have more than one real, staffed location – for example a second depot with staff. A second profile for a town you merely cover is not allowed and can lead to suspension of both.

Next Steps

Once your set-up is right, focus on reviews, citations and website pages. Our Google Business Profile optimisation includes a correct service-area set-up, and our industry pages explain how this works for roofers, plumbers and cleaning companies.

Hybrid Businesses

Some businesses both welcome customers and travel to them – a showroom that also fits kitchens, a garage that also offers mobile repairs. These can show their address and add service areas. The address must be staffed during opening hours.

Whatever your set-up, keep it consistent with your website and directories. If your website says you are based in Leeds and cover West Yorkshire, your profile and citations should say the same.

Service Areas and Reviews

Ask customers in your key towns to mention the job and area naturally in their reviews (without scripting them). Over time this builds relevance for those places – something service areas alone cannot do.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run a Google Business Profile from home?

Yes. If customers do not visit your home, set it up as a service area business with the address hidden.

How many service areas can I add?

Up to 20. Google suggests keeping them within about two hours’ drive of your base.

Will hiding my address hurt my rankings?

No. Google still uses your verified location for ranking; hiding it only affects what customers see.
